Outdoor Activities

There are many sporting activities in Sun City Center. All of the sports facilities, except golf courses, are owned by the CA and can be used by all CA members and their families, subject to rules pertaining to them.

HORSESHOE PITCHING

Purpose: To provide good exercise, have fun, and meet a lot of nice people!

Membership: Open to all CA members. Annual dues are minimal and there is a small one-time initiation fee. Accompanied house guests are welcome to pitch without charge.

Meetings: Intramural play is scheduled every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 8:30 AM with the monthly membership meetings held just prior to play on the first Tuesday of each month. Opportunities to pitch are provided regardless of skill level. Additional social events are held periodically for members and their families.

Comments: Horseshoes are provided. Reciprocal meets are held with neighboring retirement communities.

LAWN BOWLING

Purpose: To foster interest and to encourage participation in the sport of lawn bowls; to train new participants; to provide a recreational and exercise facility for SCC residents; and to promote friendly competition among members.

Membership: Open to all CA members. No experience is necessary. Club dues are $90.00 annually per person. The club has bowls that can be rented for a nominal fee.

Activities: Organized bowling competition is scheduled every morning at 9:15 AM Monday through Saturday throughout the year. Classes for new members are held periodically as posted outside our clubroom on the Central Campus. Members may participate in inter-club events and competitions held in other Florida locations. The club has many social and fun activities during the winter months.

PICKLEBALL

Purpose: To have fun playing the game of pickleball. Pickleball is a court sport described as a combination of tennis and ping-pong. It is played with a paddle and a whiffle ball. Games are always played with 4 people per court.

Membership: Open to all CA members. Annual club dues are $26 (January thru December). Those that join on or after October 1st, pay $13 for the rest of the calendar year. Players of all skill levels are welcome to participate. Instruction and equipment are available for trying out pickleball. A free trial membership is offered for 2 weeks.

Meetings: Games are played Monday thru Saturday mornings starting at 8:00 AM Monday thru Saturday. Afternoon sessions starting at 4 PM are also held. Players are rotated in and out so that everyone gets equal playing time and has fun with friendly, sociable members. Play takes place all year round. Tennis shoes are required on the court. Various tournaments and social events are held throughout the year.

SHUFFLEBOARD

Purpose: To meet new people, make new friends, to compete and have fun while getting a little exercise in one of the most relaxing of outdoor sports.

Membership: Open to all CA members. Annual dues are $7.00. Instructions are given to new members who do not know how to play, or who would like some tips on technique and strategy.

Meetings: Games are played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays at 9:30 AM. There is an annual business meeting. The club has an annual pot-luck dinner plus a Christmas Party.

SOFTBALL

The club includes a five-team league. Games are played on Tuesdays and Fridays with volunteer practices on Mondays. Rules of play are in accordance with the Senior Softball Association rules. All games are played at the South Campus baseball diamond.

A split season is played starting in early November and ending in early April. No games are scheduled during the holidays. An annual Awards picnic is held in April for team members, family and friends.

TENNIS

The Tennis Association is responsible for supervising play at the ten HarTru soft-surface tennis courts at the South Campus recreation complex.

Courts are reserved for Tennis Association Members each day until noon through a volunteer-operated reservations system. To view the current court reservations, click: HERE .

Afternoons and most evenings the courts are open for CA Members and their guests. There is no charge to use the courts. All players are required to use approved footwear.

Annual dues are $75 per player. All players are expected to provide their own equipment: racquet, balls, appropriate shoes and tennis wear. Tennis Association membership is open to members of the Community Association regardless of skill level.

VOLLEYBALL

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for those interested in a more energetic, non-contact sport to participate in the sport of volleyball, meet other people, and have a few hours of fun and exercise a few times each week.

Membership: Open to all CA members. Annual club dues are $5.00 to replace equipment as needed.

Meetings: Pick-up games are played every Monday, Thursday and Saturday 9:00 - 11:00 AM all year round. Attire for the games should be light weight clothing suitable for vigorous exercise. Everyone attending the games will be rotated in and out periodically if necessary to accommodate all who want to play. Competitions with volleyball groups in other retirement communities are organized when possible.
